After months of brainstorming, filming, and editing, the youth from our Betting on our Future (BOOF) campaign premiered their media projects at the annual Film Screening! The screening was held on May 20th, 2017 at the Shirakawa Community Center in San Jose.
During the event, the “BOOFies” shared their graphics campaign, community survey data, and other gambling information. Friends, family, and community members were invited to learn about BOOF and participate in fun photo and ice breaker activities. Everybody had the chance to enjoy complimentary snacks, milk tea drinks from The Moo Bar, and bundtinis from Nothing Bundt Cakes.
The videos that were premiered included two public service announcements (PSAs) and one short film. “See the Signs,” the prevention PSA, showed how one student gradually noticed his neighbor’s gambling problem. To show the benefits of treatment, “Out of the Dark” illustrated one gambler’s reflection on his past decisions as he waits for his last counseling session. Lastly, the short film, entitled “Jennifer’s Journal,” followed the story of teen gambler Jennifer as she begins to gamble away money and her family’s possessions. Jennifer records everything down in her journal, from her first gamble to the disappointment from her brother and best friend. All of the videos demonstrated the ways that problem gambling can affect an individual, advocating for people to seek help.
To round out the videos, the BOOFies also presented a short teaser of the documentary they’ve been working on. This educational documentary was requested from the main BOOF office, aimed to show other BOOF sites and our community how the AACI BOOFies execute the projects.
At the end of the screening, a representative from the Office of Assembly Member Ash Kalra presented the youth with certificates of recognition for their dedication to BOOF over the last year. With over 50 guests in attendance, the Film Screening was a great success.
